What a semester this was. My experience in this class was amazing, as I came into this class with a bad mindset as in like I will not be able to keep up with the works. However, over these few months I started to realize that I improved in my writing skills and my time management skill. I didn’t know that I will improve on my time management skill or even had a goal in improving it when I came to this class. I am glad that I was able to improve in this skill because it helped me get through this semester and will continue to help me through journey. Also, when I first came to this class, I didn’t know I was going to improve in my communication skills as well as collaborating skill. My goal was to improve in my writing but instead I got more out of this class. I learned more about the different types of writing and how they are constructed. I never really realized what exactly writing is, but now I know it is a way to communicate in so many ways that you might not even know.
In this course I believe I achieved most if not all of the course learning objectives. My skills for revising and editing got better than before. I used to skim through the paper and never really cared about making my papers detailed. Now I put enough information in my paper so the reader understands exactly what I’m talking about without them getting confused. Even when I’m writing, I would reread a few lines above to see what I’m writing and to make sure there is not confusing parts. So, in a way I would write and revise at the same time. For the lab report analysis essay, I built on my source using skill. I was able to implement in text citations with what I’m saying. All of the evidence I used were relevant and made sense to use it to back up my claim. I was able to put quotes in between my sentences and also paraphrase it whenever it was needed.
For the lab report analysis essay, I had to learn to use the CCNY online library and databases. I had used it before but I never really learned to use it. I would just check it out and leave the cite to use google. This semester I was able to use CCNY online library to my advantage and found it very helpful. I learned to filter what I was looking for so I was able to get specific texts that had the information I needed. With the CCNY online library I was able to find so much texts and so much to choose from. I was able to find texts fast and easy so I had enough time to read and annotate them and do my essay. Speaking of annotating, this course helped me improve my annotation skill since Before I used to write a lot when I annotate which is good but it was too much information. This class taught me to write the most important detail down so when I look back, I just read one sentence summary about the most important detail.
The engineering proposal essay was very interesting a new to me. I never wrote an essay collaboratively online. At first it was difficult to communicate since we had to find time where were all free. We set a date and time when were all free to explain what everyone is doing and what role does each one of us have. It was fun to me and less work for everyone since everyone had to do their own part which wasn’t much. What scared me the most was what if someone doesn’t do their part and we all have to do a lot of work last minute. Lucky, everyone did their part and my group was on top of their work. I didn’t know this class would teach me anything about group work. Glad it did since now I’m aware of how it’s like working with others and how to manage my time to do my work and have group meetings. Coming up with ideas with each other was my favorite part since I like to create new things an.
Before this class I would always write the summery of what I read or think of instead of writing in a deeper way and analyzing the contexts. I used to never really expand my writing. I was always thinking inside of the box so my writing wasn’t as good as it should be. But over this semester, I started to expand my writing by taking the time to ask myself questions and think about things that will help my writing be better, for instance, I now take the audience in consideration whenever I write. Knowing who I ‘am writing to helped me significantly since now I know what will be confusing to the reader. I know what to clarify when I write about something do, I don’t leave the reader question in the end. My work is more organized and well put because I expanded my writing. I also elaborate more of what I think and use evidence to back it up. I used to write a a sentence or two of what I think but now it’s a bit more than that. I am able to talk about every aspect of the question I’m answering.
Similarly, I improved in the way I format as well as articulate my writing. It has become smoother and my transitioning got better. I know when to end a paragraph and know what to talk about next but in a way that it can connect back to the previews paragraph. Before I start writing, I make some ideas in my head of what I’m going to talk about and what should I put in the beginning and in the end. I try to have the most important things in the beginning of my writing. Before this semester I would write things that came in my head but I never really organized it so that my paper was smooth and had no confusing parts. I’m glad to say, this semester I made progress in that category. Just by having a well-built paper, makes my paper easy and entertaining to read. I remember last semester I had my classmates read my paper and they always tell me that I need more information or my paper left them confused. I never really knew how to fix it, not until this class. Now my paper is more fluent when reading because now I always think about what to write next whenever I’m writing my next sentence.
One thing that helped me learn my writing this semester was peer review. Getting feedbacks is significant in changing the way I write. With the feedbacks I know what I did wrong. Sometimes the students would tell me how to fix my mistakes which is better since now I how to fix this problem in the future and it’s a step closer in becoming a good writer. Your feedbacks also helped me too. You were able to describe to me exactly what I did wrong and how I can fix it. When I looked over to fix the mistake, I realized why it was a problem. Even from reading other students work I was able to learn a few things about writing. I learned how they write that keeps me interested. I implemented that into my writing and now my writing is more on topic and fun to read.
As I write, I know what my reader wants from me as in what they want to know about when they read my paper. There are prompts and bullet points I need to answer so I make sure to answer those questions in a deeper way. This became easier for me over the semester. I was able to learn a lot and implement what I learned over this semester.
For the most part, I can say I achieved most of the course learning objectives. I was able to learn it after writing essays so that I can implement it to see how it works. It helped me improve my writing skills that I didn’t think I would. Before this semester I always thought that my writing wouldn’t improve because I didn’t know how I can improve it. But after this semester and after all of the lectures I actually improved. Even a little improvement is still good for me. It goes to show that I can improve and that this class helped me.
This semester changed my perceptions on what writing is and what can it do to a person. I learned how words can have an impact on a person. For instance, you can use writing as an advertisement so you can lure people in. I also learned how you can change people’s mind using writing which I did in this class. The engineering proposal essay was like an advertainment to the class and teacher. When I was writing the essay, I thought back to how you(teacher) taught us how to convince people by knowing what type of people they are. So, knowing that everyone was into engineering, it wasn’t hard. Before this semester I always thought that I wasn’t going to use writing in my life ever. But now I know how important it is. In the future when I get a job I will be asked to write, and I need to be professional or else it will look bad. This class helped me prepare for that which I really appreciate. Now I realized writing is everything. You can do so much with it. If you can write well and know who you’re writing to, you can do so much, and it can have an impact on others. This semester showed me how words can change someone. You can make people mad or happy just with words. If you can use it the right way you can do a lot with it.
Thus, I am glad I took this course. It helped me improve my writing skills so much than before. I am able to write clearly and detailed. After every essay I write, I always try to learn something that can help me improve my writing. The class lectures helped me learn about what writing is and what is the point of writing. We all know it is a form of communication, but now I know with the write skill you can do a lot like change someone’s mind about something. You can also use it to spread awareness or even make someone feel some of way. This journey was an amazing experience for me since I was able to see my improvements. There is always room for improvement, so my journey isn’t over. Thank you very much professor for what you taught me.
